We’ve all heard about it and it sounds mysterious. But chances are you may have already been to at least one once in your life and may not even realize it. A black-tie is a formal celebration such as a black tie wedding.

It’s usually an elaborate wedding in a very fancy catered ballroom. It could be a prestigious corporate holiday party or award ceremony as well. Either way, it sounds fancy and intimidating…I know.

What is the Black-Tie Dress Code?

The dress code for a black-tie event is formal. This means that you are in your Sunday best. Women usually wear long floor-length evening gowns.

In this modern age, however, you can get wear “creative black tie” and choose formal dressy separates such as a jumpsuit or wide-leg pants with a dressy top. I also love a high-low hemline.

If you are attending with a gentleman, a dinner jacket, bow tie, and white shirt is necessary. The traditional black tie dress code is elegant and sophisticated.

Tips for Attire Shopping for a Black-Tie Event

Christine Odin of PS Personal Styling, who specializes in event dressing, knows a thing or two about the black-tie dress code. Here is her advice:

    • Consider the time of year and season which will help you determine the color and fabrics of your formal attire
    • Consider your budget and shop for attire at a retailer that you are accustomed to feel less overwhelmed
    • Consider the venue to dress in harmony and not feel out of place (look on the venue’s website and IG account)

Christine also recommends ensuring that your purchase is in line with your personal style, body type, and personal coloring. She says…

“Don’t buy that bright red dress that you find on the rack if you know that the hue of red is not flattering on you”. She also recommends working with a stylist as they have relationships with retailers and can get inside info on stock and new incoming styles.

As a stylist myself, I know the importance of accessories. They can make or break an outfit. You should elevate your black tie attire with luxurious-looking accessories.

A simple floor-length ball gown dress, for example, can be elevated by wearing it with a beaded clutch and heels. Add a pair of chandelier earrings and a cocktail ring, and you are all set! On the other hand, if your outfit speaks for itself, then “less is more” A simple but stunning wrist watch is all you might need. This crystal bezel watch would be stunning for a black tie dress code event.

    Etiquette and Black-Tie

It goes without saying that if you are well-dressed, you need to be well-groomed and well-behaved. Most women wear updos or get their hair done neatly.

The black-tie dress code also includes a behavior code (ex, not getting wasted or dancing with a drink in hand on the dancefloor). After all, you don’t want to spill your drink and ruin your beautiful outfit!
